Analyse and develop an understanding of the features characteristic of Traditional Indian Music, with respect to the following musical concepts:

                    Pitch: Melodic features

Structure: Of a Raag

 

  1. Travel to Delhi to visit David Courtney and Chandra Kantha's Indian Music School. Sit in on an Introductory Theory lesson on Raags

During the Lesson there will be video demonstrations from a number of Musicians, be sure to take notes from these videos and other information presented during the lessonon as your knowledge of Raags will be tested in the following Raag Quiz.

  1. Whilst at the Indian Music school visit the Library and head to the Index of Raags. You are to research a Raag of your choice and Produce a 300 word analysis of that particular Raag.

Outline the most important elements of the Raag:  

  • Time of Day
  •  The particular notes of that Raag
  • The That the Raag is based on
  •  The Jati used
  1.  Now that you have an understanding of what a Raag is we expect that you will be able to research and come to an understanding of the complex Structure of Raags.Whilst at the library use the computers and go to the following website https://india.tilos.hu/english_ragarend.html.

Using this Article take note of the main sections that form a Raag and then design a scaffold of listing the sections.

  1. You have been invited to Ravi Shankars Live Concert in Bangladesh. Attend the concert an take particular note of Ravi's song called Maru Bihag. Whilst listening to this song use the Scaffold you produced in step 4 to guide you in a writing a 500 word Structural Analysis.
  • Outline all important Sections of the Raag and describe the elements heard within each section.
  • Use musical examples to support your statements
